Before Causal Nexus, there were two distinct but parallel journeys. One, a master of technical architecture and problem-solving. The other, a visionary who helped build the very foundations of South Africa’s electronic payments landscape.
Our Story
Carel, a programmer with a career spanning over four decades, was instrumental in developing the Bank Data Communications Network in the late ’70s and, later, the country’s first ATM sharing system, SASwitch. His legacy is etched into the history of South African payments, having single-handedly rewritten the entire EFT infrastructure for Pick n Pay, a system that ran for two years, and later co-founding the national payments switch, Centric Switch, the largest in the country today. His approach is driven by a deep-seated commitment to honesty and an unwavering desire to continuously innovate. He believes the future of payments lies in using technology, particularly AI, to disrupt the status quo, fostering collaboration among smaller players to challenge industry giants and empower the unbanked.
Niels, an electronics engineer with a passion for software, describes his expertise not in terms of payments, but in the art of building robust, foundational systems. He is the master of the unseen architecture, the intricate code and algorithms that make everything work seamlessly. He is a perfectionist who takes immense pride in his work, often spending personal time to ensure a solution is not just good, but exceptional. His journey began with the early integration of technology into the South African banking sector. He worked alongside Carel, navigating the country’s fledgling tech industry, and played a crucial role in building the point-of-sale systems that would pave the way for modern EFT.
Their paths, though often separate, were always on the same trajectory. In late 2012, they partnered to start Causal Nexus. Their initial goal was to address a gap in payments systems management and monitoring. While that product evolved, their core mission remained the same: to build a company rooted in their shared history of technical excellence, integrity, and a proactive, problem-solving mindset. They have built a company that isn’t just about products; it’s about a mindset—a commitment to being a trusted partner who can tackle any payments challenge, no matter how complex.
